The Barrett family talks about their choice to join the SIJ community and what that has meant for their seven children.

When we came to St. Isaac's, it just felt different. I watched the students at Mass and the reverence I felt and the love that was there - there was just something different that we couldn't quite put our finger on, but it just felt like home. So this is what we chose. My name is Matt Barrett, this is John Paul, this is Kateri. My name is Peter and I'm in 3rd grade. My name is Joe and I am in 1st grade. My name is Padraic and I'm in 4th grade. My name is Marta. My name is Ashlee and this is Margaret. This is our fifth year at St. Isaac's. It's been wonderful seeing them talk about the virtues - hearing them talk about the virtues We use them at home, I love the Education in Virtue and use it at home with the with the little ones and the boys come home and - Joe was talking the other day about circumspection, and you know I had to go look it up and make sure that we were on the same page and it's just been wonderful to use examples in the home. [Matt] I would say - so, we chose St. Isaac's - we looked at a lot of different schools in our area there's Catholic schools near our home, other Catholic schools there, we live in the Grosse Pointe Public School System, it's a great public school system. But what we found at St. Isaac's is something we couldn't get anywhere else, and that was a truly faith centered curriculum and environment that brought the faith into every part of our students' lives and our kids' lives, our lives. I think we take seriously our vocation as parents to get our children to heaven and I think Saint Isaac's is - more than anywhere else - I think St. Isaac's has helped in that. I can see that everyday. [Peter] My favorite part of the school day is to learn about Jesus [Joe] My favorite part about school... ..is... religion. [Padraic] My favorite part of school is reading. We read different things; like last week we read a book about an Indian tribe [Ashlee] The academics I've noticed being here, especially with Padraic and Peter, they've been here for 5 years now and just also seeing them learn how to learn has been hard and wonderful as a parent going through the growing pains of learning how to do homework and learning how to do projects and it not always been easy but seeing how much growth has come with the teachers' patience but also with the rigor and the structure and the discipline. Seeing them take things into their own hands now and as they gain more younger siblings they, you know, come home and they have responsibilities and they take responsibility to do a lot of it themselves and that has come a lot from their teachers and from the school.  It's wonderful to see them grow in that way. You know, we really have some great friendships here. We have a goddaughter just from parents that we've met here and we're family now and when I bring the baby or bring the little kids to meetings or events I always have a gaggle of people around me ready to help out - ready to take the baby out if needed - just hold anyone, change anyone's diapers - it's really such a welcoming community and supportive of family, and supportive of all kinds of families and we have all kinds of families here. It's just fun - I just love - I love coming to do work for the school because it's fun and you get to be with your friends. [Matt] My top three reasons for coming to St. Isaac's would be: the faith, the community and the academics. [Ashlee] That's exactly what I was going to say: the faith, the community and - academically, the teachers that know the students and serve the students in such a special way. [Matt] St. Isaac Jogues, it's a challenging curriculum and it teaches our kids discipline and how to work hard and we've seen the fruits of that in their academic endeavors but also outside of school, we've seen it on the sports fields, and on the ice, we've seen it at home with the challenges that they have to do around home.
